Learning Philosophy

Reggio-Inspired

Here at KidsPark, our child-centered approach to learning is inspired by the Reggio Emilia play-based philosophy, and sets the stage for strong academic skills and a deep, lifetime love of learning. Out of this core commitment to developing children’s individual interests and strengths, we have expanded both our outdoor classroom and our tools of learning available across all ages.

What is Reggio Emilia?

Reggio Emilia is an approach to early childhood learning named after the town where it originated in Italy. Founded in the 1940’s, it was based on the belief that every child is unique and has many different ways of expressing themselves and their interests. Rather than establishing a hierarchy in the classroom, teachers learn alongside the students, observing them and adapting according to each child and each group of children’s needs and interests.

Child-centered learning encourages creativity, confidence, and independence alongside cooperation, as students work together on projects, goals, and building relationships. Although it may at times involve less formal structure, Reggio-inspired teachers are much more involved in understanding each child individually, and in discovering how to unlock their unique communication and aptitude for learning.

All-Day Outdoors

Being outdoors offers many incredible benefits to children, increasing independence, confidence, and critical thinking, as well as overall health and wellness. Our location in Desnoyer Park means we can spend all day outside, experiencing all different kinds of weather and new ways to interact with nature.

Individual Attention

KidsPark maintains a 4:1 ratio of children to teachers, both to ensure safety and to enable our staff to give each child the time and attention needed to observe their processes of learning, communication, and unique traits that make them who they are. Observation is essential to the Reggio philosophy of learning, as the starting point before developing individualized goals and projects for each child’s optimal development.

Extra Enrichment

Music Classes

Whether as an introduction to music or an ongoing encouragement of inclination or gifts, all children benefit from exposure to and participation in the arts, particularly music. KidsPark brings in a dedicated music teacher twice a week to explore new songs, instruments, and enjoy the expression of art.

Off-site Adventures

The preschool aged class at KidsPark enjoys regular field trips and everyday adventures that would make any center-based preschool jealous. Although always changing depending on the current students, some popular outings include circus classes, children’s theater productions, local neighborhood and city events, and nothing beats a nature walk on a beautiful afternoon.

Development Time

KidsPark teachers have designated weekly time to plan and develop curriculum specially suited for the upcoming week’s students and opportunities. With more dedicated time to spend in preparation and intentional learning activities, KidsPark students have access to exciting, ever-changing experiences created just for them.
